31 December — For some of you, it already is 2013. (I just saw TV footage of celebratory fireworks over Hong Kong…) But for me, it is still almost-2013, and I am still in time to post this wish for you all.
It’s not original. It came my way because of this lost and frozen glove, carefully displayed on a tree stake by whoever had found it.
I was cutting across York Mills Park, starting a looping route through Hoggs Hollow — thank you Marty, for the book of Toronto walks! — and I stopped in amusement at the sight.
I especially loved that crooked middle finger, apparently pointing the way ahead on the trail.
My eye tracked down the stake’s guy wires and saw an oval dedication plaque at the base of the tree. They are usually “In Memoriam”; this one, instead, is “In honour of.”
It gives the name and very recent birthdate of the child being honoured, and then the donors’ wish for the child.
Which is also my wish for all of you, for everyone, as we head into 2013:
“Live happy, healthy and free.”
